Which basketball size does my child need?

Your child has caught the basketball bug. They want a ball of their own, for the driveway, the school yard and the walk to practice. Good. But which size? Basketballs are not one-size-fits-all, and the right one makes a real difference.

Ball size by age: the short answer

Here are the official ball sizes per age group in Danish basketball:

Boys: ball size by age group (DBBF)
Age group Ball size
U7–U11 Size 5
U13 Size 6
U15 to men (senior) Size 7
Girls: ball size by age group (DBBF)

U7–U11 Size 5
U13 to women (senior) Size 6

"U" means "under". U7 means under 7 years, U13 means under 13 years, and so on. Source: Danmarks Basketball Forbund (DBBF).

Why ball size matters

A ball that is too big is hard for small hands to control. Kids end up pushing it instead of dribbling, and heaving it at the rim instead of shooting. A ball that fits lets them use good technique from the start.

That is why youth basketball uses different ball sizes for different age groups. When your child trains at home with the same size they use in club games, practice carries straight over to the court.

The four sizes we carry

At ZWISH we sell basketballs in four sizes. The smaller the number, the smaller the ball:

  • Size 4: our Kids Basketball (Size 4), made for the youngest players.
  • Size 5: a step up for growing players.
  • Size 6: the next step up.
  • Size 7: the largest size.

Our Official ZWISH Basketballs, like the Black/White edition, come in sizes 5, 6 and 7.

Match the ball to the age group

The simplest rule: buy the size your child's age group plays with. Our Basketball Size Guide shows which official ball size each age group uses in Danish basketball (DBBF). We expect the same sizes to apply in most other FIBA countries.

Open the guide, find your child's age group, and read off the size. That's it. If your child plays for a club, the coach will also know which ball the team uses in training and matches. It is a quick question at the next practice.

A few tips for parents

Searching for "basketball str. 5" or a size 4 ball for børn? A few things worth knowing first:

  • Buy for now, not for later. A ball that is too big today will not help your child's technique this season.
  • Two players in the family? Siblings in different age groups may need different sizes.
  • Check the guide when they move up. When your child changes age group, check whether the ball size changes too.
  • Pack it properly. Our Basketball Bag fits a size 5 or 6 ball.

Quick checklist

  • Know your child's age group for this season.
  • Look it up in the Basketball Size Guide.
  • Not sure? Ask the coach which ball the team uses.
  • Choose the size: 4, 5, 6 or 7.
  • Pick a colour your child loves. It helps them want to practise.

From the driveway to the court

ZWISH started with youth camps and the local hoops community in Copenhagen. We have watched a lot of kids fall in love with the game, and it often starts with a ball of their own. Get the size right, and the rest comes with practice.
